Sara Yvette Spann-Herring Memorial
Hornet Scholarship

The Sara Yvette Spann-Herring Memorial Hornet Scholarship was created in honor of our 1970 classmate to support students seeking support as they go off to college or university to continue their studies post-graduation.

Applicant Criteria:

1. The applicant must be a Hillside High School Senior enrolled in Durham Public Schools, and a Durham, North Carolina resident, who has been accepted to an accredited Historically Black College or University (HBCU) or Community College.

2. The applicant must have a cumulative 2.5 GPA and submit a current transcript with their application.

3. The applicant must submit two (2) letters of recommendation from someone who is not an immediate relative (i.e. a teacher, coach, pastor, community leader, or another adult, etc.).

4. The applicant must submit a completed Hillside High School Class of 1970 Scholarship Application Form, in addition to a typed essay, no more than two pages long, double-spaced, responding to one of the prompts listed on the application.

5. ​The applicant must submit:

   1. Scholarship application form​

   2. Typed essay

   3. Current Transcript

   4. College Acceptance Letter

   5. Two (2) Letters of Recommendation (must be postmarked or hand-delivered to the 12th Grade Counselor or College Advisor by the deadline).

6. Recipients will be selected by a committee consisting of Alumni Members of the Hillsid​e High School Class of 1970.  Scholarship applicants will be notified of the committee's decision before Awards Day of each academic year.

7. Payment will be made to the selected recipient(s) following the submission of proof from their HBCU or Community College declaring the applicant's enrollment or attendance.
